Video Editing Software

The price that you are willing to pay for that video editing software will play a vital part in your choice. If, however, money is no object then whatever... find out which one is suitable before just buying one! Working out an acceptable price point, for the rest of us, is a smart way to narrow the field and makes things more simple. Your current skill set as a video editor and just how far you want to take that skill set is a good point to keep in mind.

Beginning Video Editing Software
If you are only just beginning now and don't really see a need to progress beyond the simple basics then you may have no need to purchase specific video editing software.
You can use Windows Movie Maker which comes free with Windows. It is quite limited in the video file formats it can handle as well as its other features. With that said, it must be noted that it can do quite a good job on simple editing tasks at an ideal price! Apple iMovie is an even better free video editor for Mac users.
The other products you can check out that would suit beginners are multimedia suites such as Roxio Creator 2009 and Nero 9. Programs like this offer a range of features including video editors. Because the Roxio program has a lot of wizard driven auto functions for video editing it is well suited.
Because they are not solely video editing programs they can also include a number of other useful features such as photo editing, sound editing and advanced DVD authoring.
The only real downside is that if you decide in the future to pursue video editing more enthusiastically they offer no upgrade path to a more advanced product. They generally cost around the $80 mark.
One particular program to note for this category is Muvee AutoProducer or Muvee Reveal for high definition video. This is almost fully automatic video editing software that can be quite surprising in it's effectiveness.
Home Movie Editing Software
If you are already interested in video editing and know it then the choices available become much wider. Video editing software programs at the consumer level cover roughly a $50 to $120 range or thereabouts.
There is a wide range of available products in this area and to be honest there is very little that separates them. Some more well known ones are Sony Vegas, Corel VideoStudio, Adobe Premier Elements, Pinnacle Studio and Magix Movie Edit Pro... and so on and so on!
A vital point to consider when choosing at this level is just how far you want to take your video editing in the future. Sony, Magix and Adobe having high end products in their catalogue, all offer upgrade paths from the consumer products.
Prosumer Movie Editing Software
As we move up the video editing food chain here we are entering the "prosumer" level. The lines at this point tend to become a little blurred as to what exactly is a prosumer video editor and what is professional video editing software.
Full versions of Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro etc. The cost can range anywhere between $400 to $1000 and beyond. The trap here is that you end up spending money for capabilities you might never need. They all will require you to surmount a steep learning curve due to their advanced nature so don't say you haven't been warned.
An interesting exception within this price range is Magix Video Pro X which for around $200 makes a compelling choice for a prosumer video editor.
Which Video Editing Software?
Thoroughly go over the available products and take your time. Take note of the technical features that you think you may need as well as the ones you know you will need. Reduce the number of programs you have to evaluate by price point then if it is relevant take a look at the upgrade options.
Above all... always take advantage of the free trials.
